1. Cafe Hafa

Cafe Hafa is EASILY the single most famous cafe i.n Tangier. It was first opened in 1921 and is known for its insane panoramic views of the Strait of Gibraltar.

In fact, the name “hafa” literally means Edge in English. So, expect to enjoy some of the best views in Tangier while you’re here.

Personally, I think the service kind of sucks. The food is also mediocre at best. However, the tea is REALLY good. So, I would chase down a waiter and order a mint tea for a reasonable 12 Dirhams.

Other than that, just enjoy a super historic spot that has been frequented by iconic celebrities like Sean Connery, The Rolling Stones, the Beatles, William S. Burroughs, Paul Bowles, and more.

Local Tip: If you are visiting from the Medina, stop by the Phoenician Tombs since they are literally on the way and offer epic views of the ocean.

I also like this spot because it is free to visit in Tangier and is one of the best things to do in Tangier.

2. Gran Cafe Central

Located right on the perimeter of Petit Sacco, this ultra-famous cafe in Tangier has been around since 1813 and is an integral part of the restaurant scene in Tangier.

It was once a gathering place for the city’s most influential figures in the early 20th century and remains a perfect place to do a bit of people-watching in the city before visiting some of the best museums in Tangier.

The last time I was here, I sat inside, watched the fish in the aquarium, and enjoyed my caffe latte. The coffee was solid, but the service was a bit slow since this coffee shop in Tangier is very popular.

The prices are also a bit high and I would skip the food since it was very average during one of my previous visits. Overall, though, I do like to hang out here and have been here multiple times.

3. Gran Cafe de Paris

Everyone seems to rave about visiting the Grand Café de Paris in Tangier. Personally, my experience here didn’t feel all that special.

Sure, it’s cool that this café was featured in The Bourne Ultimatum and was once a favorite of literary icons like Jack Kerouac, William Burroughs, Paul Bowles, and Tennessee Williams.

So, yes, it is a super historic spot that has been around since 1927. However, when I visited, it felt like a fairly standard café.

The coffee was decent, my omelet was fine, and while the outdoor seating is a nice for people watching, there wasn’t anything particularly remarkable about the experience.

Overall, if you’re into literary history or film locations, give this place a try. Otherwise, it’s just another typical Moroccan café in Tangier.

There are SO many reasons why Omeza Coffee Gallery is one of my fave coffee shops in Tangier. First of all, the coffee is amazing. I ordered a latte and basically inhaled it in one gulp.

I also LOVE that it is served with bottled water and that 15 different varieties of coffee are on offer.

Yes, my coffee was a bit pricey at 35 Dirhams. But, I did pay extra for oat milk (Yup, they sell non-dairy milk too) and loved that my friend was able to get decaf coffee too.

Oh, and if you’re feeling a little bit hungry then you can always order things like cinnamon rolls, ice cream, and chimney cakes. They all look super tasty, and I will deffo get a snack the next time I am here.

The other thing I ADORE about this place is the decor. It is so fun and funky since the tables and chairs are all made out of old shipping crates.

You can also see burlap coffee bags hanging on the walls and I love that there is vintage furniture in the back. So be sure to add this spot to your Tangier itinerary, and I promise you will not be disappointed.

5. Tanger Moments Cultural Café

Tanger Moments Cultural Café is a charming tea salon that was founded by Youness, an owner who is passionate about Moroccan history and culture.

The first thing I fell in love with when I visited was the intimate atmosphere and the beautiful decor. Everywhere you turn, you see quaint Moroccan tables, fun knick knacks lining the white walls, and vintage mismatched chairs.

If you can, order a fantastic Moroccan mint tea and enjoy it on the rooftop. This area is an awesome place to hang out since it features yellow and blue walls as well as tons of plants, whicker lanterns, and a thatched roof.

Don’t forget to say “hi” to Moulay the cat as you enjoy some live music in the evening. Oh, and while you can order food like harira, just know that the menu is a bit limited when compared to other cafes in the Medina.

6. Alma Kitchen and Coffee

View of a latte on a wooden table from Alma Kitchen and Coffee in Tangier.

First established in 2022 by jewelry designer Lamiae and her photographer husband Seif, Alma Kitchen and Coffee is a wonderful addition to Tangier’s cafe scene.

Unlike many of the other cafes on this list, Alma Kitchen and Coffee has a very modern feel. So, get ready to order a specialty coffee and relax amidst bright white walls, minimalist wooden furniture, and verdant potted plants.

Sure, the last time I was here, the staff was a bit slow in making my latte (it was also fairly pricey). However, once it hit my table, I loved it, as well as the tiny little cookie that came on the side.

I also adored the food since the menu features healthy, Mediterranean fare, as well as innovative takes on Moroccan classics. I had the vegan kafta tajine and LOVED the sauce, side salad, and bread that came with it.

Additionally, the wifi is great, and there is tons of extra seating in a quiet room upstairs. So, if you are a digital nomad in Morocco then this is an excellent place to do work.

7. Cafe Baba

Café Baba is another historic hidden gem in Tangier. It is tucked away in the Medina and was first established way back in 1943.

Once you step inside, it feels like traveling back in time since the interior decor includes vintage chairs and tables. Sure, this place is nothing fancy. Instead, you feel like you are stepping inside a living, breathing museum.

If you have the time, take a look at the many photos that adorn the cafe’s walls. You can see all of the celebrities who have frequented this spot in the past 80+ years, including the Rolling Stones and the Spanish/Swedish royal families.

The last time I was here, I paid 10 Dirhams for a mint tea. It was pretty good but didn’t blow my mind. My partner got a nous nous for 20 Dirhams and was pleased with his order. I also thought the staff were really warm and welcoming.

The views are also really nice and you can see the port for the ferry from Tangier to Spain.

8. Cafe at Le Theatre Riad Sultan

I was randomly walking around the Kasbah and stumbled upon this cafe/riad in Tangier. I initially went inside because I saw it was a theater and wanted to learn more about their upcoming shows.

However, once inside, I found this awesome outdoor cafe that overlooks this insanely beautiful garden. FYI, it’s the same garden that you’ll see inside the Kasbah Museum.

Anyway, I grabbed a seat and ordered a latte. Meanwhile, my friend ordered a mint tea from their small drinks menu. Honestly, they were pretty well-priced since I paid 20 Dirhams for my latte.

I also thought the staff were really lovely and enjoyed the beautiful trees, flowers, and decor that enveloped us inside this amazing spot. So, definitely stop by for the decor and if you don’t mind a super limited menu.

But, only visit if you know the best time to go to Tangier since this place is completely outdoors.

Conclusion

Tangier’s café scene is as rich and diverse as the city itself, featuring everything from historic spots steeped in literary history to modern gems serving top-notch coffee.

If it were me, I would head to Omeza if you love a modern cafe with amazing speciality coffee. Otherwise, head to Cafe Hafa if you want incredible views and delcious Moroccan mint tea.

Those are probably two of my favorite spots in the city and I know you will love them both since great tea and coffee is just one of the many reasons to visit Tangier.
