1. Kanzaman Restaurant

Aerial view of a round veggie bastilla on a slab of gray rock with lettuce all around it at one of the best restaurants in Tangier.

I LOVE Kanzaman Restaurant for a couple of different reasons. First of all, the prices are awesome. I paid like 25 Dirhams for my vegetarian Bastilla and could not have been happier after visiting cool museums in Tangier.

The exterior was thin and crispy while the interior had tasty vermicelli noodles. Yeah, it was a nice change from the Bastillas I had in Fes.

Secondly, the decor is lovely. I adored the hanging lanterns on display and think the decor is chic and stylish yet very Moroccan-inspired.

TBH, I also ordered the Bissara and wasn’t super into it. But, the service was beyond excellent (my waiter was so kind and fast) and this restaurant in Tangier was well-located in the Medina.

So, overall, I would be very happy to come back and sample some more of their delicious menu items as part of my next Tangier itinerary.

2. Restaurant Al Hamama

A plate of vegeyarian couscouse from Restaurant Al Hamama.

The first thing you need to know about Restaurant Al Hamama is that this place is a total hole-in-the-wall. So, do not expect amazing service or an epic fine dining experience.

Sorry, but that is not gonna happen here. However, they do serve really nice versions of tradtional Moroccan cuisine, including tajine and couscous.

The last time I was here my friend and I ordered vegetarian couscous. It was way better than I expected and was exceptionally well-cooked.

My only tiny criticism is that I wish the couscous had come with a bit more sauce. But, other than that I really enjoyed my dish – especially since it cost me just 50 Dirhams.

So, if you are looking for a nice but affordable place to eat in Tangier then give this spot a try. It’s definitely one of the hidden gems in Tangier.

3. Cafe Hafa

The first thing you need to know about Cafe Hafa is that you’re really here for the views. Sure, they sell things like harira and msemen, but the food here is mediocre at best.

However, the views of the ocean from this cliffside cafe in Tangier are next-level amazing, especially at sunset. So, that is the main reason you’re here.

That fact makes even more sense when you realize that the name of this place literally means “The Edge” in English.

Plus, this place has also been a Tangier institution since 1921. So, clearly they’re doing something right since this is also one of the best things to do in Tangier.

During your visit, be sure to get a glass of mint tea. The last time I was here it cost 12 Dirhams and even my Moroccan partner said it was really good. So, if you want to try epic mint tea then stop by and enjoy the views.

Just know that the service is not the best. During my last visit, I waited for the waiter to bring my tea and eventually gave up. I just climbed up the stairs and asked for tea since it was taking forever.

So, temper your expectations and enjoy this cafe in Tangier for what it is. Also, do not expect to have this place all to yourself since it is VERY popular.

Local Tip: Visit the Phoenician Tombs afterward since this is easily one of the best free things to do in Tangier.

4. Abou Tayssir

Aerial view of falafel, hummus, and a special salad platter with three salads.

I have been here a couple of times since I sometimes need a break from Moroccan food and love ordering their falafel and hummus.

I love coming here because every time I come here, the falafel and hummus are always amazing. I also love that the falafel comes in this cute little heart shape.

All in all, the food at this local Syrian restaurant is homemade, well-priced, and super delicious. The last time I was here I paid 65 Dirhams for hummus, falafel, and a Coke Zero.

This small eatery is also routinely packed with people. So, I was super excited when they expanded to a new location with a lot more tables.

So, this is one of the best places to eat in Tangier if you enjoy really good Syrian cuisine and want to fuel up after a day trip from Tangier.

Basically, if you only eat in one place, since you’re taking the ferry from Spain to Tangier for the day, let this be it.

5. Restaurant El Amrani

Tucked away inside the narrow streets of the Medina, this restaurant is so chill and local that they don’t have a menu. I literally asked and he didn’t have one.

The owner also does not speak English. So, get ready for a fun and exciting visit as you order traditional Moroccan foods like Harira and Tajine. The also have a lot of kebabs as well since this spot is very meat-heavy.

Anyway, I ordered the tajine and harira while I was here and loved the harira. It was nice and thick and a giant bowl cost me 10 Dirhams.

I also ordered a vegetable tajine for 35 Dirhams and loved how saucy the tajine was. It was really easy for me to dip my bread in the sauce and sop up all that delicious liquid on the bottom of the tajine.

I also enjoyed the seasoning of the tajine since it was very flavorful.

My only tiny complaint is that my tajine had a ton of squash. I kind of wished it came with more potatoes, but that’s okay. I didn’t tell the guy about my preference so he didn’t know.

So, deffo stop by if you want to try authentic Moroccan cuisine and don’t want to pay mad $$$ for it.

6. Alma Kitchen and Coffee

Aerial view of a kefta tajine in a ceramic bowl with parsley on top. You also have some salad and a coffee on the top of the photo.

Located in the New Town, Alma Kitchen and Coffee is NOT the place to go if you are looking for traditional Moroccan food at reasonable prices.

Rather, this beautifully decorated, enchanting modern cafe is designed for foreigners who want brunch, an awesome latte, or more Western-inspired fare like an avocado terrine or a roast beef sandwich.

They also have a spacious seating area upstairs where you can sit and do a bit of work if you feel so inclined.

While I loved the decor, the service was a bit slow the last time I was here. However, I eventually got an amazing latte (with oat milk) and a beautiful vegan kefta tajine that was done extremely well.

The sauce was wonderfully flavorful and I loved that my entree came with bread and salad on the side. Sure, the prices are a bit high since I paid 95 Dirhams for my tajine and 40 Dirhams for my latte with oat milk.

But, you kind of expect the prices to be a bit high given the ambiance and menu inside a place like this. Overall, I would come back and think it’s a great restaurant in Tangier if you are looking for Western food.

A view of me and y boyfriend sitting together in Chefchaouen with the Spanish Mosque behind us. We did this during a fun Fes to Chefchaouen day trip.

7. Restaurant Ahlen

Restaurant Ahlen is easily my favorite restaurant in Tangier and if you only go to one place on this list, let this be it. Just be prepared for a bit of a wait since this spot is quite popular.

It’s also a very low-key restaurant. So, don’t expect much when it comes to ambiance. But, the food is so good. I ordered the harira and it was the best I’ve had in Morocco honestly.

I also love that they brought fresh, warm bread to the table along with delicious cheese with olive oil on top.

I then had the loubia which was amazing. I basically gobbled it up and only paid 55 Dirhams for loubia, harira, and a bottle of fizzy water.

But, my fave part is that they bring delicious mint tea and cookies to the table for you to enjoy. It is totally free and included with the meal.

I went back a couple of times during my time here and always recommend this spot to everyone. Yeah, it’s definitely one of the many reasons why Tangier is worth visiting.

I also kind of wish they did a cooking class in Tangier since the food is THAT good.

8. Cafeteria Chaouni

Aerial view of Chabakia, dates, a pancake, and a bowl of harira soup from one of the best restaurants in Tangier.

So, this place is probably the most “no frills” restaurant in Tangier on this list. TBH, I found out about it because my friend came here with some locals.

Overall, I thought the food was really nice. I enjoyed my harira, dates, chebakia, and this potato pancake thing (no idea what it’s called), all of which cost me a mere 25 Dirhams.

The downside is that this place only has outdoor seating. So, things got a bit uncomfortable since it started to pour while I was eating. Thankfully, they had some umbrellas that we could sit under while we ate.

Other than that, I thought the staff were super lovely. Just be prepared for no one to speak English. You’ll also want to get here early since they can and will run out of food.

Yeah, they serve a lot of fried fish that locals love to gobble up on a daily basis.

Local Tip: This place only has outdoor dining. So, pay attention to the best time to go to Tangier before you stop by. Otherwise, you could get rained on like us.

9. Kebdani

Yes, Kebdani is a little more expensive than some of the other Tangier restaurants on this list. I paid 90 Dirhams for my couscous and I thought that was a bit steep.

However, this restaurant actually has an ambiance to it since the interior is adorned with lots of cute decor that you won’t find in other places.

I also love that they give you bread (good quality), eggplant salad, harissa, olives, and lentils as part of a complimentary appetizer for the table.

In terms of my couscous, I love that it came with a side of sauce, as well as with tons of veggies and chickpeas on top. I just wish that the texture of the couscous was a bit better, but other than that I really enjoyed the dish.

I finally was ready to go but then the staff told me that complimentary tea and cookies were included with my meal. So, I waited at my table and both were really nice. Overall, I think you get a lot of bang for your buck at this charming spot.

The staff were also lovely and really made me feel safe in Tangier and taken care of. They even ran to give me my umbrella when I left it in the restaurant. Whoops!

10. Sarayah Food

Need a break from all that Moroccan food? If so then give Sarayah Food a try. I was a bit skeptical about how good the food would be but was pleasantly surprised by the quality when I actually dined here.

It’s definitely not the best Indian food I’ve ever had since it feels a bit inauthentic and lacks some flavor. But, it was good enough that I would come back.

Just know that this place is near Hotel Chelah (they have great live music) and so the prices are a bit higher. I paid around 95 Dirhams for Butter Chicken but thought the flavors of the dish were spot on.

I also loved the naan and used that to sop up all the beautiful sauce that came with my entree. Plus, the service is really good. Additionally, the staff are very fast and efficient and helped make the dining experience awesome.

11. Dar Harruch

The first thing that drew me to Dar Harruch was the stunning decor. It reminds me of a charming riad in Tangier where you can sit and enjoy some awesome Moroccan food.

However, once you sit down you are treated to delicious complimentary bread and an assortment of beets, carrots, olives, and several spicy sauces.

When I was here I ordered the harira as an appetizer. It was a bit odd since it tasted like they put a ton of cinnamon in the soup.

Personally, I preferred the vegetable tajine. It was a bit expensive at 90 Dirhams but it was really well-cooked. There was so much flavor in the sauce and I love that they cooked the tajine with apricots and prunes.

It added a nice sweet flavor to the tajine that really balanced out the savory flavor of the rest of the sauce.

12. Chez Hassan

Chez Hassan is easily one of Tangier’s most popular restaurants. So, do not expect to have this place all to yourself. I would also try and stop by early since their is usually a line.

But, that makes sense when you taste the outstanding food, which is freshly prepared over an outdoor grill by the owner himself.

The last time I was here I got the seafood tajine, the kebabs, and a salad for less than 100 Dirhams. Honestly, the food was amazing and everything was super well-priced. So, I basically try and stop by every chance I get.

Oh, and if you happen to stop by on a Friday then try their awesome couscous. It is super flavorful and 100% delicious.

13. Gran Cafe Central

Okay, Gran Cafe Central is not my all-time fave place to eat. I think the food is just so-so and I really only come here for a nous nous or for a latte.

But this place is like a local institution and easily one of the most famous cafes in Tangier. After all, it’s located right along Petit Sacco and is a great place to watch all the people walk through the Medina.

This ia also why a lot of people enjoy sitting outside. Personally, I like going inside since the decor is lovely and they have these cool fish tanks.

Just be prepared for slow service since this place is always packed. But, I found most of the waiters here to be nice.
