Well, never fear because this local lives in Essaouira and is just a 3-hour bus ride from Marrakech. Therefore, I am in both cities frequently and am more than qualified to help you examine Marrakech vs. Essaouira.
Just be aware that they are VERY different cities with very different vibes. So, comparing Marrakech with Essaouira is kind of like comparing apples to oranges.
I mean, Marrakech is a GIANT city (like Agadir versus Essaouira)and probably one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country since it is home to some of the biggest landmarks in Morocco.
In contrast, Essaouira is a small, super chill beach town where there isn’t a ton to do. So, it’s a good place to go if you want to chill by the beach and do some surfing or kite surfing.
So, deciding between Essaouira and Marrakech just depends on you and the type of vacation you want.

Marrakech or Essaouira? Which One is Better? The Short Answer.

Essaouira and Marrakech are both awesome but in very different ways.
Generally, I would choose Marrakech if this is your first time in Morocco since this metropolis is home to many big-name attractions you won’t want to miss.
Additionally, Marrakech is better if you like big cities or 3-day Marrakech itineraries that keep you busy from dawn until dusk since there are A LOT more things to do in Marrakech than in Essaouira.
FYI, the nightlife in Marrakech is also about 10,000 times better than the nightlife in Essaouira. So, if you are a party animal then hit up the nightclubs in Marrakech.
In contrast, Essaouira is a great choice if you want to relax and hang out by the beach. There aren’t a ton of big things to do in Essaouira and it is a much smaller, less crowded place.
But, it’s chill and your Essaouira wardrobe will be pretty low-key since you can learn how to surf in Essaouira or try kitesurfing.
So, Essaouira is a great choice if you hate big crowds and just basically want to chill by the beach as you try kite surfing and surfing. I mean, you can find things to do but there aren’t a ton of bucket list activities here.
Truth be told, you can easily visit both cities since you can take the bus from Marrakech to Essaouira. You could even find out how to rent a car in Essaouira and explore the surrounding area once you’re there.

Getting to Marrkaech and Essaouira

Marrakech is a bit easier to get to than Essaouira since Marrakech has a train station and is home to a major international airport.
In fact, Marrakech Menara Airport receives direct flights daily from many cities across Europe and around the world.
To get from Marrakech Airport to the Medina, just use bus number 19. Tickets are 30 Dirham ($3.00 round trip) and the trip won’t take too long.
However, you can also use the bus and arrive in the city at various CTM/Supratour bus stations, as well as at the Marrakech Railway station. Unfortunately, high-speed rail services are not available in Marrakech.
In contrast, Essaouira is a bit less well-connected. Yes, there is an airport with direct flights available from Paris, Bordeaux, London, Brussels, Dusseldorf, Madrid, Marseille, and Gran Canaria, but flights are more expensive and limited.
Additionally, there is no train station in Essaouira. So, you will need to use a Supratours bus to get from Marrakech to Essaouira and a CTM bus to get from Essaouira to Agadir and Casablanca.
But, Essaouira is much smaller. So, once you travel to Essaouira you can walk from the Supratours or CTM bus stations to your hotel in the Medina. You could also take the number 2 bus from the airport to the Medina for 7 Dirhams ($0.70).
Local Tip: Essaouira is also a much easier city to get around. You can generally walk to most places in Essaouira. In contrast, Marrakech is much bigger, and that sometimes makes taking a bus or taxi necessary.
Accommodations

In terms of accommodations, both cities are home to a ton of super nice riads, hotels, hostels, and five-star luxury hotels.
However, because Marrakech is much bigger than Essaouira, there are better luxury hotels and there are more of them to choose from.
But, the hotels in Essaouira are much cheaper and I think the service in Essaouira is more personal and better since many of the riads here tend to be smaller.
In Marrakech, a bed in the dorm of a hostel will probably cost around $10.00 a night while you can get a bed in a dorm for as little as $6.00 a night in Essaouira.
In contrast, luxury hotels in Marrakech can cost you upwards of $1100.00 per night while the nicest hotel in Essaouira will probably only cost you $300.00 per night.
That being said, the luxury service in Marrakech is of a much higher caliber than what you’ll find in Essaouira.
Additionally, hotels and riads in Essaouira tend to be much better located since the city is smaller. So, you’ll have an easier time exploring the city from your hotel in Essaouira than in Marrakech.
Marrakech Attractions

Otherwise known as the Red City, Marrakech is probably one of the most famous and popular cities in Morocco.
That’s because this metropolis is home to a wide array of historic attractions that you’ll have a hard time visiting if you only spend one day in Marrakech.
So, if you like a jam-packed itinerary that keeps you busy all day long then Marrakech is a better choice for you since you can visit a ton of different places like the Marrakech Museum, the Saadian Tombs, and Bahia Palace.
These are some of the best museums in Marrakech and they give you great insight into the unique history, culture, and architecture of this amazing city.
However, if you like amazing gardens then Jardin Majorelle has got you covered. This botanical oasis is home to over 300 species of plants and a vibrant blue home you’ll love photographing.
Afterward, head down the street to the Yves Saint Laurent Museum and learn more about this incredible fashion icon.
Finally, spend some time soaking up the old-world feel of Marrakech’s incredible Medina. It’s huge, packed with people, and you will get lost. But, it’s a fun place to walk around and do a bit of shopping in Marrakech.
All in all, Marrakech is a vibrant hub for culture vultures or for anyone who loves exploring historic sites from centuries past. There are also some amazing bars in Marrakech where you can enjoy the city’s vibrant nightlife scene.
Essaouira Attractions

Essaouira is a much smaller coastal city and isn’t home to as many big-name attractions as Marrakech.
Yes, you can walk along the quaint streets of the charming blue and white medina before relaxing on Main Beach and checking out the stunning views of the ocean from the top of the Skala de Port.
You can even watch the sunset from the top of the Old Skala, enjoy a fun Essaouira cooking class, and visit a local hammam in Essaouira.
However, the real highlight of your visit won’t be an attraction but doing fun water sports like surfing and kite surfing.
The epic winds that come in off the coast make Essaouira the perfect place to hit the waves and try fun water sports. You can also watch the sunset and drink in Essaouira at a cool beach bar in Essaouira.
Just be aware that while there is nightlife in Essaouira, this definitely isn’t a big party town.
So, Essaouira will be an ideal city for you if you love the beach or just want to spend your days relaxing in a pretty little beach town with lots of friendly people. There are also lots of free activities in Essaouira too.
What Marrakech and Essaouira Have in Common
Great Food

It should come as no surprise that Marrakech and Essaouira are both home to great restaurants.
On the whole, prices are higher in Marrakech for lunch and such. But, there is a wider availability of high-quality international cuisine and Marrakech restaurants serving alcohol.
Additionally, Marrakech is home to much more luxurious, world-famous restaurants like Nobu. So, I would go to Marrakech if you are looking for epic fine dining or are sick of Moroccan food and want to try something international.
In contrast, Essaouira is home to a wealth of cheap and delicious local eateries where you can indulge in seafood that is caught fresh from the ocean.
So, add Essaouira to your itinerary if you love fresh seafood and want to try some well-priced, authentic, local cuisine.
Essaouira is NOT the place for you if you want epic international fare since aside from Moroccan, all you can get here is Italian, Asian, and some Western food.
The quality of international food here can also be very hit or miss since most world-class chefs don’t come to this tiny beach town.
Nice Shopping

When comparing Marrakech vs Essaouira just remember that both cities have incredible medinas where you can do a bit of retail therapy.
Yes, the Medina in Marrakech is much bigger and has a wider array of stores. But, I find the vendors to be a lot more aggressive. I also think the prices in Marrakech are a lot higher and the quality of goods for sale is mediocre at best.
The streets are also PACKED with people and you always have to watch where you’re going. Plus, the medina in Marrakech is so big that you will almost definitely get lost.
In contrast, the medina in Essaouira is a lot smaller and easier to navigate.
The prices are also more reasonable, the vendors are much more chill, the quality of goods for sale is better, and you’re less likely to get run over by a rogue motorbike,
Personally, I would pick shopping in Essaouira over shopping in Marrakech any day of the week.
However, if there is something super unique that you’re looking for then you will probably have to get that in Marrakech since Essaouira probably won’t have it.
Additionally, the medina in Marrakech feels a bit more historic and old-world (y).
So, if you want to watch local artisans use age-old techniques to create amazing goods then Marrakech is the perfect spot for you. I mean, Essaouira doesn’t even have a tannery, so good luck watching artisans make incredible leather goods.
Cultural and Historical Significance

When deciding on visiting Marrakech or Essaouira, it’s important to note that Marrakech is probably a bit more culturally and historically significant.
So, Marrakech is a better place to go if you want to learn about the history of Morocco and see amazing historic landmarks like the Saadian Tombs and Bahia Palace. You could also do a long but fun day trip to places like Aït Benhaddou.
In contrast, there aren’t many major historic sites to see in Essaouira. Yes the Medina is a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site and you can visit the Old Skala and the Port de Skala to get a sense of the city’s maritime past, but that’s about it.
Plus, you can easily see all of these Essaouira attractions in a day or less. Therefore, if you’re looking for rich historical and cultural experiences then Marrakech is the place to go.
Nature

There aren’t a ton of parks in Essaouira, but you do have the beach. So, if you want to escape the chaos of the city and enjoy a nice walk along the beach then Essaouira is perfect.
However, if you want to visit well-manicured gardens like Majorelle Gardens of the Menara then Marrakech is a better choice.
Additionally, Marrakech is much better located if you want to do cool day trips to natural wonderlands like the Agafay Desert and the Atlas Mountains.
So, if you want to experience a wide array of natural landscapes in a short amount of time then Marrakech is the better choice since there are fewer day trips from Essaouira available to you.
Relaxation

You can visit a wide array of hammams, or traditional Moroccan bathhouses, in Marrakech and Essaouira. I would say that while there are more hammams in Marrakech, they also tend to be more expensive.
However, both cities have great hammams where you can go to experience a traditional Moroccan bathing ritual that includes exfoliating your skin and washing your body with black soap made from olives.
I would go to the hammam in Marrakech though if you are looking for a supremely luxurious experience in a super high-end spa.
Weather in Marrakech Versus Essaouira

The weather in Marrakech is MUCH hotter and drier than the weather in Essaouira. So, if you are a warm-weather person who is looking to chill by the pool then Marrakech is a much better choice.
Just research the best time to visit Marrakech before your trip since summer highs can exceed 45°C (100°F+). I would also carry a water bottle and pack plenty of sunscreen since the heat can be very brutal in Marrakech.
Additionally, Marrakech is a much drier city. I wouldn’t characterize Essaouira as a rainy city but it receives a lot more rain than Marrakech.
Now, Essaouira on the other hand is a much windier and colder city. So, pack a warm jacket and a scarf so that you can use it to protect your face from sand flying all over the place.
In general, highs don’t exceed 25°C (77°F) in Essaouira. So, you won’t find hotels with A/C in the room whereas every hotel in Marrakech is fully outfitted with a high-power A/C unit.
So, Essaouira is a better choice if you hate the heat and don’t mind wearing a sweatshirt or jacket in the evening.
Local Tip: If you are staying at a hotel with a pool in Essaouira, always check to see if the pool is heated. Essaouira is quite cool so if the pool isn’t heated then it will make swimming a lot less enjoyable.
